Poland will build a barbed wire fence on the border with Russia

Poland will build a barbed wire fence on the border with the Russian city of Kaliningrad. The construction work of the 2.5 meter high temporary barrier will start immediately, announced the Minister of Defense of Poland, Mariusz Blaszczak. The barrier in Kaliningrad will be similar to the one installed last year along the border with Belarus, Mesager reports.

In the context of rising tensions due to the war in Ukraine, the authorities in Warsaw are concerned about security. The Polish official referred to the crisis a year ago, when thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants tried to cross the border from Belarus to Poland, some of them dying.

At the time, the EU accused Belarus, a close ally of Russia, that the people were being used in "hybrid" warfare to destabilize Europe. Minsk denied that it had committed any crime.

The exclave of Kaliningrad, where Russia has a significant military presence, lies on the Baltic coast between Poland and Lithuania and is separated from Belarus by a narrow border corridor.
