Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, projected on the Sydney Opera House

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a jeweled crown was projected on the Sydney Opera House on Friday evening, in a gesture of respect for the sovereign who was also Queen of Australia.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese laid a wreath at Parliament House in Canberra on Saturday, saying Australians had suffered a "tremendous loss" in the Queen's death.

Queen Elizabeth II was also the head of the Australian state, but also of 14 other states outside Great Britain, but her role was only ceremonial. The roof of the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most famous buildings, was lit up on Friday night with a portrait of the Queen wearing a jeweled crown, offering a spectacular view of the city's harbour.

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, at the age of 96, in Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
