Ukraine calls for "immediate" UN Council meeting / VIDEO /

Ukraine on Monday called for an "immediate" meeting of the UN Security Council in the context of the threat of a Russian invasion. Also, the Kremlin Security Council voted on Monday to recognize the independence of the separatist republics in Donbas, according to Reuters.

"At the request of President Volodymyr Zelensky, I officially request immediate consultations by members of the UN Security Council on behalf of Article 6 of the Budapest Memoranda," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba posted on Twitter.

The request is based on a 1994 agreement guaranteeing the integrity and security of the former Soviet republic in exchange for the renunciation of nuclear weapons inherited from the former USSR. The purpose of the meeting would be to discuss practical steps to ensure the security of his country and to de-escalate tensions with Russia, reports Agerpres.

Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will decide on Monday whether to recognize the independence of the two separatist territories in eastern Ukraine: Donetsk and Lugansk.

In recent days, OSCE observers have seen an intensification of fighting between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian army, with several attacks. The situation in eastern Ukraine is becoming increasingly tense. Lugansk residents were left without electricity, heat and water. It all happened after a series of explosions at a thermal power plant and at the water filter station. People in Donetsk also lost their drinking water after an attack on a sewage treatment plant, and two schools were destroyed by ammunition.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has been going on since 2014 and, according to official figures, it has killed 14,000 people.
