Kamala Harris, Romania: We will defend every inch of NATO territory

The US Vice President thanked Romanian citizens on behalf of the US for their "extraordinary generosity and courage" towards Ukrainian refugees and reaffirmed the US commitment to the application of Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, writes Radio Free Europe Romania.

All people saw that you received the Ukrainian refugees. Today I reaffirmed the strength of the relationship between the USA and Romania. The US commitment to Article 5 is unshakable. An attack on a NATO member is an attack on the entire alliance. We will defend every inch of NATO territory, "US Vice President Kamala Harris told a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Friday at the Cotroceni Palace.

The second strongest person in the United States said he was in Bucharest to reaffirm the United States' commitment to Romania's security, where they had recently sent 1,000 troops to supplement the eastern flank.

"We have made decisions in Congress for $ 13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine. I was deeply moved by what you told me about refugees in Ukraine. We are together, the USA and Romania, to do what is needed from a humanitarian point of view. $ 4 billion of the $ 13 billion approved by Congress for Ukraine goes directly to humanitarian assistance, "said Kamala Harris.

The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, arrived in Romania today at around 13.20, being greeted at the "Henri Coandă" International Airport by the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu. The official reception ceremony took place on the Cotroceni Ceremony Plateau. The official anthems of the USA and Romania were sung.

The Romanian delegation present at the ceremony was attended by the Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, the President of the Senate, Florin Cîţu, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Ciolacu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, the Romanian Ambassador to the USA, Andrei Muraru, and Presidential Advisers Ion Oprişor and Luminiţa Odobescu .

Klaus Iohannis and Kamala Harris have schedule private talks and official talks, at the end of which, at 15.30, they will make joint  statements.

On Thursday, before attending the informal meeting of the European Council in Versailles, President Klaus Iohannis said he would discuss with US Vice President Kamala Harris NATO's position on the Eastern Flank, the Allied fighting group that would be hosted by Romania and about the American soldiers who came to our country.

According to the Presidential Administration, the presence in Bucharest of US Vice President Kamala Harris reconfirms the strength of the bilateral strategic partnership and the firm commitment of the United States to support the security of Romania and NATO allies on the Eastern Flank, while reflecting the US administration's commitment to in the context of the current security threats posed by the illegal aggression of the Russian Federation, as well as in the management of refugee flows from the borders and the provision of humanitarian assistance.
