Zelensky asks the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution condemning Russia's "energy terror"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN Security Council on Wednesday evening and asked it to adopt a resolution condemning the "energy terror" used by Russia, which he equated with the use of a weapon of mass destruction, showing that Moscow's latest strikes on critical infrastructure affected, on the threshold of winter, not only Ukraine, but also neighboring Moldova.

"When the temperature outside is below zero degrees and tens of millions of people remain without electricity, heat and water as a result of Russian missiles hitting energy installations, this is an obvious crime against humanity," Volodymyr Zelensky told the Security Council via video conference on the day Ukraine was hit by a new wave of Russian missile attacks that have killed people and left millions without electricity and heat.

"Russian terror led to a blackout - and not only in Ukraine. The light also went out in neighbouring Moldova. Everyone should understand what Russia wants to achieve with such strikes. Energy terror is an analogue of the use of weapons of mass destruction," Volodymyr Zelensky told ambassadors in the UN Security Council, who gathered on emergency at the request of Ukraine.

"The world should not be held hostage by an international terrorist. Russia is doing everything to make the electric generator a more powerful and necessary tool than the UN Charter. We must and can give a real meaning to everything - and especially to the UN Charter", Volodymyr Zelenskiy pointed out.

"We expect a strong reaction from the world to today's Russian terror. We are waiting for the reaction of the partners. We expect the reaction of friends - not just observers. We expect the reaction of all those who truly recognize the UN Charter", the Ukrainian leader also said.

On Wednesday, Russia launched a massive missile attack across Ukraine, which killed 10 people, forced the shutdown of nuclear power plants, and cut off water and electricity supplies in a large part of the country, as well as in the neighbouring Republic of Moldova.

"Today is just one day when we received 70 rockets. This is the Russian formula for terror. All this is directed against our energy infrastructure: hospitals, schools, transport, residential neighbourhoods, all suffered," Zelenski said.
