Oleg Serebrian: There is no danger of military tensions in the Transnistrian region
The Moldovan authorities consider that there is no danger of military involvement in the Transnistrian region, and that the recent explosions in Tiraspol and near Cobasna had a more psychological effect. The statements were made by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian, during the show "Thursday, with Lilana Barbăroşie" on Moldova 1.
"The explosions that took place in the Transnistrian region were not claimed by anyone, which is somewhat curious as a structure, and the damage was minor. So, the effect was more psychological," said Oleg Serebrian, noting that similar situations have occurred in the region before.
According to Serebrian, the so-called red code, introduced by Tiraspol after these incidents, is annoying. "We do not see any reason to believe that there is a real danger. We believe that there is no danger of military involvement in the area," said Serebrian.
"Unlike Ukraine, we have not been warned about imminent military action in the Republic of Moldova. (…) Chisinau announced that there is no danger of military tensions, of thawing this conflict. Regarding the possibility of organising some attacks, we considered that this danger is quite low," the official said.
On the other hand, Oleg Serebrian mentioned that there are forces that want to destabilise the situation in the region. "This has always been the case, especially in a war as large as the one in Ukraine," he said.
Referring to the negotiation process for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, Oleg Serebrian said that the "5 + 2" format is currently flawed because two mediators - Ukraine and the Russian Federation - are at war.
"It's hard to imagine how such a mechanism could work. It is currently on hiatus. There is the other "1 + 1" format, which was also put on hold, but I can't say that we stopped the talks with Tiraspol," said Serebrian, noting that the" 1 + 1 "format has been transformed into a "5 + 2” hidden, because the representatives of the mediators participate in the negotiations within the working groups.
"We will see after May 9 how the situation will be and we hope to resume talks in the "1 + 1" format," said Oleg Serebrian.
