War in Ukraine: Explosions in Kharkov, Kyiv and Sumi
The explosions during the night took place in Kharkov, Kyiv and Sumi, the international media reports. "Green corridors" for evacuating civilians will be opened in the Sumi region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Russian soldiers to surrender, and has passed a bill on parliament aimed at extending martial law.
In Kyiv, the Emergency Services say they have received calls from three different neighborhoods. Messages are posted on social networks, in which people say that the walls of the houses have vibrated and that the windows have been broken due to the blast. A residential building in Kyiv caught fire. There is no information about the victims, according to digi24.
In Kharkov - the second largest city in Ukraine, a fire broke out in the central market area of the city, after heavy bombing. New images of the effects of previous bombings have also been posted. In some of them you can see the University of Architecture, which was destroyed.
On Tuesday morning, the Mariupol local council announced that 2,537 people had died in the city. The clarification comes to put an end to rumors that the effects of the Russian attacks would not have been as terrible as the Ukrainian authorities claim.
The "green corridors" - for the evacuation of civilians - will operate today in the Sumi region, between 09:00 and 21:00, the authorities in the region announce.
In a new video released overnight, Volodymyr Zelenski said Ukrainian forces had helped 3,800 people flee fighting areas in Lugansk and Kyiv. Zelensky urged Russian soldiers to surrender: "Russian recruits, listen to me carefully! Russian officers, you already understand the situation. You will not gain anything from Ukraine. You will take lives. There are many of you, and some of you will die. But why die? For what? I know you want to live, "Zelenski said.
Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted a bill to parliament to extend the martial law by another 30 days from March 24.
Martial law is enforced when a country is in major social turmoil, in a time of deep crisis or in a state of war.
