Maia Sandu: Russia has changed its rhetoric in relation to the Republic of Moldova since the beginning of the war in Ukraine

The natural gas crisis, as well as Moscow's recent statements to our country, were two topics addressed by the country's president, Maia Sandu, at the Bled 2022 Strategic Forum, which she attended online. The head of state also mentioned that the Republic of Moldova continues to be "dependent" on energy, and in this situation, it needs more support from the European Union (EU), in order to more easily overcome the energy crisis, Moldova 1 reports.

Of course, we liked the idea when the EU announced that it would create a platform to collectively procure gas, but it still needs to become operational. But the question is the price of gas, because in Moldova we are now paying 10 times more than we were paying a year and a half ago, and you can imagine the impact on the population, because Moldova is a poor country. The question is where will the prices stop this winter? At least with gas, because they are already very large. What is the EU doing about this? We have the situation when those who sell gas, sell less, but make more money because of these crazy prices and it is difficult to call them market prices", declared Maia Sandu.

At the same time, the head of state also spoke about the fact that Russia has changed its rhetoric in relation to our country since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, because the Republic of Moldova condemned this invasion, which is why Moscow is sending increasingly threatening messages to the security of the state.

"We are in a difficult situation because we are in a region close to war. Moldova was subjected to Russian propaganda for years, which constituted a long-term problem. We still have people who do not understand the reality. We also have an acute dependence on Russian energy resources. We should all learn our lessons about energy. Moldova has certainly learned its lesson and we are trying to work for the diversification of sources, but it is not an easy thing to do quickly", added the president.

The Bled Strategic Forum is an annual international conference organized since 2006 in Slovenia and was initiated by the Government of this state. Its purpose is to be a platform to express opinions about modern society and its future.
