Maia Sandu, at the meeting with Emmanuel Macron: "We see our future in the European Union"

The Republic of Moldova wants to join the European Union and will continue with determination and firmness. The statement was made by President Maia Sandu during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. The head of state, who is on a working visit to Paris, said she welcomed the French president's initiative to create a European Political Community that would support and speed up our EU accession process.



\"We see our future in the European Union as a strategic option that offers the Republic of Moldova the chance to remain part of the free world. We will discuss France's support in this regard today, "she said.

"In any case, I hope that in the coming weeks we will be able to give the Republic of Moldova a clear answer that it deserves, taking into account the political, humanitarian and security situation. In the end, I would like to say that France's support will be lasting because we know that the repercussions of the crisis on Moldova will have a long-term effect. Beyond the current situation, we will strengthen bilateral cooperation," the French president said.

The two heads of state will also address the dynamic bilateral dialogue between our countries. Maia Sandu said that the states have good cooperation in the field of justice and the fight against corruption.

"I thank the French authorities especially for their expertise and support in identifying and confiscating stolen assets from the Republic of Moldova. We will also discuss the cooperation in the commercial-economic, cultural, educational field and the perspectives of cooperation in sectors such as energy efficiency, environment, agriculture, tourism," specified the head of state.

Maia Sandu stressed that the opening of the office of the French Development Agency in Chisinau will accelerate the negotiation of budget support loans and the financing of important projects in the field of energy, irrigation, reforestation or modernization of water and sewerage systems.

Another topic of discussion announced by Maia Sandu during the press conference will be about France's support for the rehabilitation and modernization of the railway on the Chisinau-Ungheni section, which will open the perspective of connecting to the European railway network TNT.

The President reiterated that the Republic of Moldova strongly condemned Russia's war against Ukraine, calling for the restoration of peace. Maia Sandu stressed that more than 450,000 refugees have passed through Moldova since February 24, and almost 90,000 remain in the Republic of Moldova, half of them children. In this context, the president thanked France for the help of over 300 thousand euros provided for the management of the refugee flow, but also for the decision to relocate 2,500 refugees.
