Maia Sandu met with Laura Codruţa Kovesi: "We count on EPPO's help in investigating frauds committed by fugitives from the Republic of Moldova"
The Republic of Moldova is committed to advancing the process of European integration, and the functioning of justice and the fight against corruption remain decisive in this process, said the head of state, Maia Sandu during the meeting with the Chief Prosecutor of the EU Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), Laura Codruţa Kövesi.
"Fighting corruption is the commitment we have made to the people and it remains the priority of the governing team. We focus our efforts on eliminating abusive practices in the management of public money and property and on providing institutions in the justice sector with effective tools to fight the scourge of corruption ", said Maia Sandu.
The President of the Republic of Moldova said that progress in this area is more difficult, especially in the case of investigating large corruption or in identifying and recovering assets transferred abroad, noting that the progress of investigations is determined by cooperation with prosecutors from other jurisdictions.
In this context, our country counts on the cooperation between the criminal investigation bodies from the Republic of Moldova and the prosecutors from the EU Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), the first criminal investigation institution at EU level. Moreover, the head of state welcomed the fact that the General Prosecutor's Office and the head of the EU Public Prosecutor's Office will sign a collaboration agreement in this regard.
"We rely on EPPO's help in investigating frauds committed by fugitives from Moldovan justice in recent years, but also in overseeing the Republic of Moldova's use of European funds," Mai Sandu added.
