Maia Sandu after meeting with Emmanuel Macron: "For us, joining the European Union is the strategic option to remain part of the free world"

The Republic of Moldova is counting on France's support for the status of a candidate country, and the authorities are working hard to implement the reforms, said Moldovan President Maia Sandu after the meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron in Chisinau. France, for its part, says it is open to deepening co-operation with the Chisinau authorities and wants the message for the Republic of Moldova to be positive at the Brussels summit held on June 23-24 under the French presidency.

"For us, joining the European Union is the strategic option to remain part of the free world, especially in the current security context. We hope that our request will be supported by the Member States of the European Union at the Brussels Summit on 23-24 June. Mr. President, we count on the ongoing support of France for the status of candidate country of the Republic of Moldova. In the difficult conditions we are in, this important step will help us to continue the initiated reforms and the consolidation of our democracy ", declared Maia Sandu.

Maia Sandu assured that the authorities will continue the process of democratization and transformation of the country in accordance with European standards.

"We know that the European integration of the Republic of Moldova will be a long and complex process, which will require sustained efforts. I want to be clear: we are not looking for shortcuts in this process. We are ready to do our homework - and we want to be appreciated according to the merit, according to the result of our work ", added the president.

Emmanuel Macron said that France supports the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova and wants the message in Brussels to be positive.

"Moldova has applied for EU membership and this wish is perfectly legitimate. This candidacy will be debated in about ten days at the European Council on 23-24 June on the basis of an official opinion issued by the European Commission. On this occasion, France will play the role of president in order to allow a consensus to be reached that recognizes the extent of the efforts made and the legitimacy of the Moldovan people to join the EU ", said Macron.

The French president expressed "admiration for the solidarity and generosity shown by the people of the Republic of Moldova towards the Ukrainians who fled the war." In this context, Macron reiterated the European Community's support for dealing with security threats in connection with the war in Ukraine. "The EU must live up to the challenges of our time," Macron said. French President announces that Moldova will receive 40 million euros from the European Union to strengthen its defense.

During the visit of the French President to Chisinau, three agreements were signed between the Republic of Moldova and the French Republic: the Convention on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion, the Agreement on the activities of the French Development Agency, Proparco and Expertise France, a loan of 15 million euros from the French Development Agency for the Republic of Moldova.

According to President Maia Sandu, the support of the French Development Agency will be used to repair Chisinau-Ungheni railway section, which opens the prospect of connecting the Moldovan railway network to the European network, and Proparco, the partner of the French Development Agency, will offer small and medium loans for  rural areas and the agricultural sector. The lending program will support approximately 3,600 new jobs over 5 years.
