Oleg Serebrian: There is no imminent danger of the Cobasna ammunition depot being used in the war in Ukraine
Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian says there are no military threats to the Republic of Moldova yet. According to the official, a possible use of Tiraspol airport by the Russian army is just a hypothesis. Oleg Serebrian also says that both the political and economic elites and the people in the area reject the idea of an attack on Ukraine from the Transnistrian region, IPN reports.
The Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration says statements about a possible readiness of Tiraspol airport to receive Russian aircraft are just a guess. According to the official, there is no information that would prove the use of the Transnistrian region for logistical purposes by the Russian army. Moreover, Serebrian says that the use of ammunition from Cobasna in the war in Ukraine at this time is also unlikely.
"From a military point of view, I have never received conclusive evidence that there is military training in the Transnistrian area. The possibility of using the region logistically is a hypothesis. For the time being, the military operations are quite far from Râbniţa district, recently the Russian troops withdrew even from Nikolaev to the administrative border of the Kherson region. We cannot say that there is an imminent danger of this warehouse entering the area of military operations. There is no danger that this deposit will be used," said Oleg Serebrian during the show" Resoomed with Ileana Pîrgaru" from RliveTV.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the 1,500 Russian soldiers present in the Transnistrian region represent a very small number in relation to the scale of the war in Ukraine. The official says that both the region's leadership and the population do not agree with the idea of an attack on Ukraine.
"The danger is quite limited, given the scale of this war. Judging by the numbers, by the number of troops in the Odessa region, it seems unlikely that they will enter Ukraine from this area. In addition, the rhetoric coming from Tiraspol seems to me to be quite cautious in relation to Ukraine. I cannot say that there is a military danger to us. Let's not forget that a good part of the political and economic establishment there are Ukrainian citizens, the connections of this region with Ukraine are very big, it is an important Ukrainian ethnic component in the area, about 1/3 of the population of the region are Ukrainian citizens. The society does not share the idea of an attack on Ukraine. Neither the business environment there nor the population is in favour of this war," the deputy prime minister added.
On April 5, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff announced that Tiraspol Airport was ready to receive Russian aircraft. Also, according to Kiev, "the use of the territory of the breakaway Transnistrian republic of the Republic of Moldova to support an offensive operation in a southerly direction is not ruled out."
