Pavel Filip: 10.8 billion lei of bank fraud will be refunded by court decisions
Most of the embezzled money from the three banks in the country can be restored through court decisions. The statement was made by Prime Minister (PM) Pavel Filip at the Moldova Live broadcast on TV Moldova 1. The PM said that the General Prosecutor's Office had elaborated a strategy for the recovery of money, by which it can be recuperated by court decisions 10.8 billion lei.
Pavel Filip specified that bank fraud is worth 13.5 billion lei and that all this money would be refunded through court decisions and the sale of the assets of the three bankrupt banks.
"I have seen the figures, there are 13.5 billion lei, which is the banking fraud. Four groups involved in money laundering have been identified. This is the group Shor, Platon, Filat, Gacichevici. There are court decisions and these decisions cover 10.8 billion lei. There are still 2.7 billion lei, out of which 1 billion was returned and 1.7 billion National Bank is going to take back from the sale of the assets of these banks," Pavel Filip specified.
Asked why politician Ilan Shor is at liberty, Pavel Filip replied: "He is convicted. I'm sure this man will serve his punishment."
The head of the Cabinet of Ministers reiterated that such fraud could not be repeated.
"For us it was important to stabilize the banking system and it could end with the bankruptcy of the Republic of Moldova. Everything we did, we did with the International Monetary Fund. We passed laws, we fortified the National Bank. Such frauds can not be repeated. We have the Department of Fraud Investigation and the Department of Recovery of the Stolen Money. There were Kroll reports. Based on the Kroll report 2, the General Prosecutor's Office has developed an asset recovery strategy," said Pavel Filip.
In the discussion over the parliamentary elections in February 2019, the PM said he had not yet made a decision if he would run for election.
"In my time I will make these announcements because I do not like to speak with allusions, it will be decided I think the following days, and I like to announce after a decision is made," the prime minister said.
Making the totals of the year, Pavel Filip mentioned: "2018 was the year we started building." Among the successes of the Government's activity, the prime minister mentioned the implementation of reforms, wages and pensions increase, energy interconnection projects with Romania, opening of the country for foreign investments. At the same time, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers admitted there were still problems in the fields of education and health.
The current government team was appointed on January 20, 2016.
