A former ambassador to the US asks the parliamentary majority to adopt a Magnitsky law

The Republic of Moldova must urgently align itself with the sanctions regime (Global Accountability Magnitsky Act), fully applying them to Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Şor, as well as in all spheres in which the two oligarchs have material interests, says the former ambassador of the Republic Moldova in the USA, Igor Munteanu, as a reaction to the anti-government protests in the centre of the capital, IPN reports.

Igor Munteanu urges the parliamentary majority to adopt a Magnitsky law, at the same time mentioning a project, which has him as its author. At the same time, Munteanu recommends that the authorities of the Republic of Moldova urgently adopt an anti-crisis Plan to prevent and anticipate all sources of political destabilisation, and that this Plan be known to the public and interested actors. The former ambassador also recommends using the Support Platform for Moldova in November, scheduled from Paris, to identify sufficient financial sources to offset the price of electricity. "Following the example of Romania, which covers 70% of the market cost of energy, the Moldovan state must undertake interventions through grants and loans", he said.

Munteanu states that the Republic of Moldova urgently needs an immediate energy decoupling plan from the Transnistrian region, "giving up the useless meetings of some tired officials (1+1 format), where the Republic of Moldova loses its credibility and precious time, instead of putting to respect the head of this regime". Igor Munteanu, together with the group of experts he represents, declares himself ready to consult the Government on each of these priorities.

Igor Munteanu claims that the Şor mafia is using social discontent to destroy the PAS Government, using current high costs. According to him, another goal of the protests is to condemn the attempt to identify the "non-Russian" alternative for natural gas, goals pursued by the coordinators from the Kremlin.

"Yesterday's protest would not have taken place if the competent bodies of the Republic of Moldova had cut off in time the funding sources of the Şor group, consolidated in the last 10 years by the result of rigged concessions, of "stations and bus stations" handed over to the mafia through intermediaries and all kinds of real estate giants, financed from obscure sources", says the former ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the USA, Igor Munteanu.
