Union of the Romanian Principalities, 161 years ago

Today, it turns 161 years since the Union of the Romanian Principalities. The event will be held in Iasi, through a series of events which are expected to be attended by President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, ambassadors, parliamentarians and representatives of the local administration.

The soldiers, firefighters and gendarmes from Iasi will march through the city center.

Also, a concert of folk music, "and a meal with tea, boiled wine and Moldovan pies" will be organized.

On 24 January Romanians celebrate the 1859 union of the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, which represented the first step towards the creation of the modern Romanian state. The union of the two provinces, which shared a common culture, language and history, had been a longstanding desire of their elites.
