NBS data: The birth rate in the Republic of Moldova decreased by more than 15 percent in 2021
The country's birth rate decreased by more than 15 percent in 2021 compared to 2018. According to the representatives of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), if in 2018 about 35 thousand children were born, last year there were born under 30 thousand babies. Experts say that one of the main causes is migration.
In 2021, 5,307 fewer children were born in our country than in 2018, the head of the population and migration statistics department of the National Bureau of Statistics, Elena Galer, told Radio Moldova.
According to the NBS representative, 15 thousand 74 boys and 14 thousand 156 girls were born last year.
"In the Republic of Moldova, in 2021, 29,230 children were born, being in a continuous decrease from year to year. If we compare with 2018, the number of live births decreased by 15.4%, the distribution of newborns by wards for the year 2021, 106.5 boys per hundred girls", said Elena Galer.
Our citizens are witnessing a reduction in the birth rate, which is already a formed trend, said expert in demography Valeriu Sainsus. The university lecturer also said that there are several factors that determine the low birth rate.
"Reproduction remains quite affected, which means that births happen in the states where young families have settled, there is also the indirect impact of demographic aging because the vast majority of the population of reproductive age is at the upper limit. The probability of having a birth remains quite reserved in the context of the demographic circuit of the generations. The vast majority of young people plan the birth in cities", concluded Valeriu Sainsus.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, if in 2018 there were 2 million 729 thousand inhabitants in our country, today there are more than 125 thousand people less.
