Room for Dialogue: Rising death toll is caused by the British strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus

We are witnessing the increase in the number of deaths, from one day to the next, of patients infected with COVID-19, in the Republic of Moldova. According to statistics, about 20% of the number of patients who end up in intensive care units lose their lives. This increase is caused by the British strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has also reached the Republic of Moldova. The remark was made by the Deputy Head of the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Health of the Chisinau City Hall, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Boris Gâlcă, during the show "Room for Dialogue" on Radio Moldova.

However, the figure of 20% of fatal cases is appreciable. "It is a great success and shows the high professionalism and competence of our doctors, because in other states this number is much higher," said Boris Galca.

The increase in the number of deaths has been also seen in other countries. "It's about the British strain, a mutant strain of the COVID-19 virus, which is a much more aggressive strain than the original one. If we analyze the statistical data globally, we observe everywhere the increase in the number of deaths," added the doctor in medical sciences.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, over five thousand people in our country have lost their lives, and worldwide, there have been over 2.8 million deaths.
