Low level of air pollution in Chisinau and Balti during the pandemic

The level of air pollution was reduced in Chisinau and Balti during the pandemic. This was announced by Marina Lungu, head of the Environmental Reference Laboratory of the Environmental Agency. According to her, the reasons are the restrictions imposed in these months. The topic of air quality was addressed in the show "Public Space", Radio Moldova reports.

According to Marina Lungu, laboratories for checking air quality are only in the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti, which is a problem because we do not have a national coverage.

"From January to May, inclusively, we have a pollution level determined to be low to high. The causes would be several: the intensification of the meteorological conditions, the measures imposed by the infection that affects us all, the economic agents did not activate and we had less transport on the streets. That's why we had a lower level of pollution. Since people returned to work, in Balti and Chisinau we already have a higher level of air pollution ", says the specialist.

Marina Lungu added that in the last ten years, the level of air pollution has been increasing, largely due to the increased number of transport units.

"About ten years ago there was a sudden increase in the level of air pollution, over 80 percent is due to transport. We can't expect better numbers. Imported cars are less polluting, but no one cancels old ones. If we were to take the old cars out of use, it would improve the situation ", said the head of the Environmental Reference Laboratory of the Environment Agency.

We remind that Moldova will mark on September 7 for the first time the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, a new action in the Environmental Calendar, organized in accordance with the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations of December 19, 2019.
