Medical premiere in our country, successfully performed at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery

New performances achieved by doctors from the Republic of Moldova! For the first time in our country, at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in the capital, an operation was performed to install electrodes on the spinal cord that stimulate the spinal cord with electricity. This operation gives a chance to people who are immobilized in a wheelchair to be able to stand up. The therapy is widely used in several European countries, reports Moldova 1.

The first operated patient is Ion Ababii, a 36-year-old patient from Singerei. Four years ago, he suffered multiple injuries, including a spinal cord injury.

The operation lasted more than two hours. According to doctors, the intervention is a chance for people nailed to the bed or in a wheelchair, who have not felt any improvement from other treatments.

After discharge, Ion on his own will electro stimulate his spinal cord at least 40-60 minutes a day. The results will be evident after at least two months, when he will return for a new rehabilitation.

"This device is a complementary method to recovery. With his help, we facilitate the actual movements, our goal of recovery is to frame the patient in social life, as much as possible to become independent," said Victor Duca, physiotherapist.

Annually, at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, about a thousand patients are hospitalized for surgery or recovery, after various traumas or serious illnesses.
