"Health for all": Causes of allergies in children

Allergic reactions in children are much more common lately, so allergies sometimes become a real danger to the health of our little ones. During the show "Health for All" on Radio Moldova, Irina Moldovan, pediatrician, head of the Pediatrics Department at the municipal clinical hospital "V. Ignatenco” spoke about the causes of allergies.

"Although allergies can occur at any age, most often they occur in children.  Allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a substance that is harmless to most people (…).  The causes that generate allergies can be: food allergens, environmental allergens, dust, pollen, mold and animal hair.  Also, medications, insect or animal bites and especially hereditary factors, if one or both parents are allergic," explained the pediatrician.

Irina Moldovan recommends that patients with allergic manifestations address in time and be diagnosed correctly, so by selecting the right behavior we can prevent the aggravation of the patient's condition.

"Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening and is caused by insect bites, ingestion of food or medicine.  This state of emergency is characterized by difficulty breathing, edema of the eyes, lips, sudden drop in blood pressure, all these indicate a major emergency that requires addressing the 112 service," says the pediatrician.

As for the preventive measures that parents can take to avoid creating an allergic field for their children, they consist of a natural, healthy diet, free of preservatives, dyes and E's.

"The most important way to reduce allergic reactions in children is to limit or completely avoid contact with allergens that cause the development of allergies.  Parents can make a decisive contribution to the prevention of allergies in children," Irina Moldovan emphasized.

In case of an allergy, the doctor also recommends a specialist consultation and avoid self-treatment.
