Holy Great Martyr Pantelimon, celebrated in the Eastern Ortodox Church
Orthodox Christians today celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Pantelimon, the healer of the sick, also called Pintilius the Traveller. People also say that from this day, summer gradually begins to give way to autumn, informs MOLDPRES.
Today, in the churches of the country, memorial services are held.
Saint Pantelimon is one of the most well-known and beloved saints of the Church of Christ. Mentioned on the 9th of August, this saint is often called a "penniless doctor", thus showing that he did not seek riches and was content with what he could have from his means and did not ask anyone to pay him for the favours done.
The Holy Great Martyr and Healer Pantelimon lived in the time of Emperor Maximian Galerius and was originally from the city of Nicomedia. He saw the light of day in the year 284, from a pagan father, a senator at the emperor's court, and a Christian mother. His first name was "Pantoleon", meaning "the all-powerful one like a lion". He successfully completed the School of Medicine in Nicomidia. Later, the young Pantelimon was entrusted to the doctor Euphrosin for apprenticeship. Acquiring much knowledge and a chosen wisdom, he was noticed by the emperor, who chose him as his physician.
Later, for his faith, Pantelimon was beheaded by pagan doctors. The legend says that blood and milk flowed from the martyr's wounds, and the olive tree to which he was tied bore unprecedented fruit. Thrown into the flames, his body remained intact. Saint Pantelimon is considered the protector of doctors, healer and protector of soldiers. On this day, the healers collect their medicinal herbs.
The relics of the Holy Great Martyr Pantelimon were taken to several countries, and his head is kept at the Rusicon Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece.
