Veaceslav Platon, charged in a new money laundering case
The controversial businessman Veaceslav Platon was charged in a new money laundering case called "Laundromat". The information was confirmed for TRM.MD by Mariana Cherpec, the media prosecutor in charge of the General Prosecutor's Office.
The money laundering scheme through the banking and judicial system in several countries, including the Republic of Moldova, was uncovered in 2014 by several investigative journalists. The value of these transactions amounted to over 150 billion dollars, and in the Republic of Moldova more than 22 billion were laundered. Thus, in 2021, a number of 40 people were arrested in the Laundromat case, and some of them were arrested. Also, 15 judges were charged in this case, and 13 of them were removed from criminal prosecution.
Previously, Veaceslav Platon was sentenced in 2017 to 18 years in prison for illegally obtaining one billion lei from Banca de Economii. In May 2020, the General Prosecutor said that Platon had been convicted illegally in the case of stealing the billion, and that prosecutors had falsified several pieces of evidence. After two weeks, the suspect was released, and two months ago, the magistrates acquitted him in the bank fraud case. Last year, Veaceslav Platon fled the Republic of Moldova, after which he was internationally wanted.
