(VIDEO) The International Opera and Ballet Festival "Maria Biesu" starts today in Chisinau

Art, music, and beauty are always a source of light, joy, hope. The “Maria Bieşu” International Opera and Ballet Festival, in which artists from 11 countries will participate, will prove it in these times of pandemic. The event, now in its 29th edition, will begin on Sunday, September 5, with the opera "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi, Moldova 1 reports.

"I was glad that my program was free during this period and I came with all the love, with all the joy to be with famous artists from the Republic of Moldova and other countries," said Lucian Petrean, soloist of the National Opera in Bucharest.

"I am happy to sing in the opera "La Traviata" in Chisinau under the baton of master Yurkevych. We also performed together at the extraordinary concert dedicated to the Independence of Ukraine on August 24, and on September 14, I will sing at the inauguration of the season of the Prague Opera House. Violeta from "La Traviata" is the dream of any performer: you experience dramatic, lyrical, tragic states on stage. You die of love," says Lucie Kaňková, soprano from the Czech Republic.

Spanish tenor Celso Albelo, a world star who sings on the world's most famous opera stages, says art is now a priority.

"Culture has always been very important, but especially, in such difficult times for humanity, we artists are obliged to bring the spectators a state of well-being, to raise their spirits. That's what we do all over the world. That's why I came to sing for the second time at the opera festival in Chisinau," said Celso Albelo, soloist from Spain.

Our artists are also looking forward to the event, which since 1990 has been a musical symbol of the beginning of autumn in Chisinau.

"A celebration of music in Chisinau, but, unfortunately, there are restrictions of COVID and it is complicated, but it is a holiday," specified Petru Racoviţă, artist of the people.

The festival is a tribute and an expression of gratitude to Maria Biesu, the prima donna of the National Opera, who initiated the music festival in Chisinau in 1990. The current edition differs from the previous ones.

"Now, with all the anti-epidemic rigors, we will have only 25 percent of the room occupied. The festival will be extended for a longer period, there will be four opera performances, two ballet performances and a gala concert," mentioned Andriy Yurkevych, first conductor at the "Maria Bieşu" National Opera and Ballet Theater.

The gala concert, in which areas from the opera performances in which the famous Maria Bieşu performed, will traditionally be performed, will take place on September 26.
