Ukrainian forces blew up two bridges to slow down the Russians in Lugansk
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has released satellite images showing two destroyed bridges, as well as other weapons equipment in the village of Bilohorivka, near the Ukrainian-owned strategic city of Lysichyansk.
The head of the Lugansk region, Sergei Gaidai, described Bilohorivka as a "fortress" that - like the city of Mariupol - "held back a large number" of Russian troops. The Russian military did not comment on the Ukrainian statement, which was not independently verified.
After failing to capture the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, and the northeast of the country in the first weeks of its invasion, Russia said it would now focus on taking full control of neighboring eastern Lugansk and Donetsk regions. So far, Moscow has failed to do so.
At the same time, Ukraine announced that it had repulsed Moscow's forces in a counterattack that could signal a change in the pace of the war. The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff said it had recaptured Pitomnik, a village on the main highway north of Kharkov, halfway to the border with the Russian Federation.
In Mariupol, the General Staff said that Russian forces continue to launch artillery and air strikes amid continued resistance at the Azovstal plant.
According to an operational update of the Ukrainian Army General Staff, nearly 800 ballistic and cruise missiles were launched on targets in Ukraine since the beginning of the war on February 24th.
At the same time, Russian gas flows to Europe via Ukraine fell by a quarter after Ukrainian forces stopped using the Sohranovka transit route. The closed transit point usually handles about 8% of Russian gas flows to Europe.
