Maia Sandu says peace in Moldova depends on Ukraine's resistance

The Transnistrian region and the provision of transit routes for the export of grain from Ukraine through the Republic of Moldova were the main topics discussed by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, at a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. The statement was made by the head of state during the "Good Evening" show, with Mircea Surdu from Moldova 1.

Thus, during her visit to Kyiv, Maia Sandu assured the President of Ukraine that at this moment there is no danger of a conflict from the Transnistrian region, and the Chisinau authorities are in talks with the Tiraspol regime. Moreover, the head of state stated that "Ukrainians are determined to defend their homeland and build a peaceful future for children."

"We discussed several things, but two topics were on the agenda: one was the subject of Transnistria and I assured the President of Ukraine that there are no such risks from the Transnistrian region, based on the information we have and the discussions on which we have with the Tiraspol regime. The second important topic we discussed is the provision of transport routes, especially for the export of grain from Ukraine. We are already doing a lot, but our infrastructure is weak and needs to be developed in order to increase export and transit capacity through the Republic of Moldova, especially food. We discussed the extent to which we can provide the railway for transportation, the extent to which it can be used, as well as  the port of Giurgiulesti," said Maia Sandu.

Referring to the measures that our country is taking to increase its defence capacity, Maia Sandu said that the authorities are making efforts to keep the Republic of Moldova out of the war.

"Let's keep the peace here in the country and we have achieved this so far and I hope we will succeed from now on. It is true that it is not up to us. It depends on the resistance of Ukraine and we must say that Ukraine is very brave," the president specified.

The head of state also spoke about the National Army, mentioning that it is important that it be equipped.

"If Russia tries to come at us one day, what do we do? We send the army with the hoe to the planes to defend us. We do not want to attack anyone, we do not want anyone to involve us in the war, but it is a reality for which we must prepare. The EU said it was offering us non-lethal equipment, even though we also needed ammunition," she said.

At the same time, the head of state reported that the number of refugees in our country has decreased, most of them have returned to Odessa. However, the government must prepare for the school period, because the war will not end until September, and the refugee children must go to school.

"The number of refugees has decreased to some 70,000, most of whom have come home, especially those from Odessa, and the others who are here are receiving assistance from the UN. The government must prepare for the school period, because apparently the war will not end until September and that means we will still have refugees, especially children who have to go to school," Sandu added.

TRM.MD recalls that President Maia Sandu met on June 27, in Kyiv, with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. The head of state visited the cities of Bucea and Irpin, which were liberated at the end of March from Russian occupation.
