New mysteries elucidated by archaeologists at the Soroca Fortress (VIDEO)
Archaeologists have unraveled new mysteries of the Soroca fortress during the second stage of the restoration of the medieval fortress. Inside, a medieval sewer system was discovered, built five centuries ago. According to specialists, this is another proof that Soroca Fortress had a complex construction. The excavations are taking place within the European Union-funded project, reports Moldova 1.
Archaeological excavations have been going on for more than a month according to a well-structured plan. Research is being carried out in several areas of the fortress. Some parts have already been investigated in the first part of the building renovation project. After the first excavations, stones were discovered with many inscriptions on them, and the most spectacular is Gura de Lup, discovered right at the entrance to the Citadel.
"We reached a depth of five meters from the level of trampling in the fortress. It is a very well worked pit and it can be seen that the initial project of the architect was executed. Here in the area where it was covered earlier, we identified some symbols, some crosses on the walls, which we suspect are made in the initial period of the fortress. We are going to research them and where we still have such analogies, how we can date them and how they can help us to solve the mystery related to the analogy of the Soroca fortress,” says Ion Ursu, doctor of history.
Archaeologists say they expected to find spikes at the bottom of the pit, as in other fortifications, which were intended to destroy enemies. To their surprise, the studs were missing, and under the so-called floor they discovered a sewerage system for groundwater. The Wolf's Mouth, according to archaeologists, at one stage was used as a hearth, where charcoal and bones from food scraps were burned. It is to be preserved so that it can be seen by those who come on a trip to the Soroca Fortress.
"It is important that in the process of research we found another fragment of the old fortress of wood and earth, so we found part of the ditch of the old fortress that preceded the stone fortress, which proves to us many times that here the ford over the Dniester, which it was Vad, it was customs, a lot of work was done, it was fortified. There are several stages of construction of this fortress," says Ion Tentiuc, doctor in archeology.
Archaeological excavations take place during the second stage of restoration of the medieval fortress, through the project "Stephen the Great, common history-common heritage, Soroca-Vaslui", funded by the European Union. The value of the project is over 1.6 million euros.
