Ana Revenco: "We have a war on the border, and security risks remain major"

The Republic of Moldova must invest in national security, if it wants to face the challenges, said the president of the National Security, Defence and Public Order Commission, Lilian Carp during a press conference. According to the official, in the near future, the working conditions within the MAI will be improved and the salary of the employees within the institution will be increased, and the Migration and Asylum Office will be supplemented with staff.

"We, with certainty, in the near future will reform the Migration and Asylum Office by increasing the staff, we will improve the conditions of those who work for everyday security. Another aspect is the social package for those in the MAI, including salary increases due to the inflation we had this year. MAI faces the challenges that exist, even if it is not staffed", declared Lilian Carp.

The President of the National Security, Defence and Public Order Commission, Lilian Carp, also referred to the attempted cyber attacks on information systems of state importance that took place in the last 72 hours on the territory of the country. He emphasised that the institutions of the Republic of Moldova are dealing with the attacks of the last few days, but he did not say precisely the countries from where they are carried out.

At the same time, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ana Revenco emphasised that cyber attacks on information systems are atypical phenomena in the Republic of Moldova, and the competent bodies have more work to do to increase the resilience of national security to such hybrid threats.

"The specialists carry out all the necessary measures in cooperation with all the specialised subdivisions of all the authorities to deal with these attacks. In parallel, additional measures are being taken to allow us to gradually strengthen the level of resilience of these systems to such attacks. Of course it is a new phenomenon, it is not for nothing that we call them cyber attacks as part of hybrid threats which are atypical phenomena for the security system of the Republic of Moldova", explained the minister.

Ana Revenco stated that because of the war in Ukraine, there are major security risks in the Republic of Moldova. According to her, MAI faces several difficulties.

"Reality shows us that the risks are continuously evolving and have increased dynamics. We have war on the border, and security risks remain high. The MAI threats that we face and test our capacity are: diversified crime, intense movement of people, arms trafficking, drug trafficking, human trafficking, ways of crossing the border with the trafficking of chemical substances, cyber attacks are being activated and reinvented, crimes with the use of modern technologies and those committed in the online space have increased," Revenco said.
