Most traders in the Central Market use plastic bags, which are prohibited by law

Most Central Market traders continue to sell products in plastic bags. They say eco packaging is too expensive. Moreover, at the stalls, you can find plastic bags of all colors, but also sizes. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Inspectorate claims that it conducts regular raids, but to no avail, reports Moldova 1.

The buyers I spoke to say that although biodegradable bags are more expensive and not durable, they still agree that plastic bags should be taken off sale.

Meanwhile, specialists from the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection say they are taking all necessary measures to stop the sale of plastic bags. The last raids organized together with the police and the Agency for Consumer Protection were carried out in May, being sanctioned several sellers.

"Thus, within these actions, the persons who violated the legal provisions were sanctioned, and 10 lawsuits regarding the contraventions were drawn up by our colleagues from the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. At the same time, at the beginning of July, the campaign "Without plastic I feel fantastic" was organized, said Maxim Bruma, inspector for environmental protection.

Plastic bags are prohibited from January 1, 2021, except for packaging up to 15 microns thick. This law also includes disposable plastic utensils, including hygienic ear sticks. For violating these provisions, the law provides for penalties of up to 4,500 lei for individuals and up to 12,000 lei for legal entities.
