The Republic of Moldova joins the EU Environment and Climate Program "Life"

The Republic of Moldova joined a European environment and climate program by signing the official accession of our country to the "Life" Program. According to the European commissioner for the environment, oceans and fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, this fact represents an important step towards the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU bloc. Statements in this sense were made by the European official from the rostrum of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on Friday, November 25.

On an official visit to our country, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, said that the European Union would boost the efforts of the Republic of Moldova in developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy. The official gave a speech in the plenary session of the Chisinau parliament and announced the official signing of the Republic of Moldova's accession to the "Life" Program.

"One of the objectives of my visit is to inaugurate a small but symbolic step towards the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the EU family, signing your family's membership to the EU Climate and Environment Program called "Life". This will help Moldova address climate and environmental issues. We will thus support you to prepare for membership of the Union in a green way. I came today to tell you personally how much the EU appreciates the steps Moldova has taken so far to implement this agreement in the field of the environment. There are areas in which we will have to act quickly, for example waste management, the adoption of circular economy practices or the improvement of air quality", said Virginijus Sinkevičius from the rostrum of the Parliament in Chisinau.

In his speech, the head of the Legislature from Chisinau, Igor Grosu, stated that the states of the community block, as well as the European institutions, act together to help the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to get through this period of crisis and become part of the European world. The President of the Parliament is of the opinion that the efforts of the authorities are aimed at improving living conditions and developing a better and friendlier environment.

"Being part of the free world, of the European Union, means a safe and good life for our citizens, but it also means efforts on our part to improve people's living conditions, to take care of the environment. We all have one home - our planet, and if we don't take care of it, then no other reform will be enough for the future of our children to be, indeed, in a healthy environment", said Igor Grosu.

The authorities propose that for ten years at least 100 thousand hectares of forests be planted. Among the priorities are the launch of separate waste management and collection programs, and the provision of drinking water to localities. At the same time, with the support of partners, the Republic of Moldova aims to develop renewable energy sources and reduce polluting emissions by over 80 percent.
