A digitization centre has been inaugurated at the National Library

The cultural, scientific, educational heritage of the National Library of Moldova will be translated into electronic format. The inauguration of the National Digitization Centre, supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan Cooperation Agency, took place today. In the context of the project, transportation, equipment installation and staff training were provided, Moldova 1 reports.

The centre is equipped with high-performance equipment for scanning books, manuscripts, publications, and microfilms.

"We received a donation of four scanners, two of which are semi-automatic, one is for microfilm and microslides and the other is the robotic book scanner for automatic scanning," said Diana Silvestru, director of the Digitization Centre.

The grant of over seven million lei offered by the Government of Japan is the largest project implemented by the National Library.

"The beneficiaries of the products that will be created in this centre are the users of the National Library and our partners within the national program "Memory of Moldova", said Elena Pintilei, director of the National Library.

"It is an important and unique step, as these materials that we have on paper today have a time limit, but through digitization we pass them into a virtual eternity and make them accessible to all," said Iurie Turcanu, Deputy Prime Minister for Digitization.

"For the past 30 years, we have provided economic assistance to Moldova, development assistance in several areas. This time, such a centre is much desired for the future of the country, for education and for the preservation of the national heritage," said Yoshihiro Katayama, Japan's ambassador to Moldova.

"We want to assure the citizens of the Republic of Moldova that we will make every effort to create a unique digital library system in our country synchronised with the Romanian Library and the EU library system," said Sergiu Prodan, Minister of Culture.

The inauguration of the centre took place on Japan's National Day and was complemented by a book exhibition on the land of the rising sun.
