The Leova-Bumbăta bridge - the first new bridge over the Prut to be built after the occupation and annexation of Bessarabia

A new state border crossing point between the Republic of Moldova and Romania is to be built at Leova-Bumbăta. The agreement for the establishment of the crossing point was approved by the government yesterday. In accordance with the provisions of the Agreement, the opening of the Leova-Bumbăta crossing point will be carried out after the creation of the appropriate infrastructure, which involves the reconstruction of the bridge in the locality, which was destroyed by the Russian army in 1944. Moreover, during the Soviet period, most of the bridges over Prut were destroyed, reports Radio Moldova.

Until 1944, more than 20 stable and floating bridges connected the two banks of the Prut. However, most of them were destroyed, including the Leova-Bumbăta bridge, which according to some historical books dates back to 1781 and which was destroyed by the Russian army in 1944.

Moreover, after the war, only two railway bridges remained over the Prut: the one from Cantemir-Fălciu and the one from Ungheni-Holboca.

During the Soviet period, 5 other road bridges were rebuilt (Giurgiuleşti - Galati, Leuşeni - Albita, Cahul - Oancea, Sculeni - Sculeni and the crowning of the Costeşti - Stânca dam) Later, during the period of independence, in 2005, the Lipcani bridge was rebuilt - Rădăuţi  Prut.

During the years of independence, the so-called "Flower Bridges" actions were organized on the bridges between the Republic of Moldova and Romania. In fact, the first bridge of flowers across the Prut, which took place on May 6, 1990, prepared the Republic of Moldova for the country's independence, declared a year later. About 1,200,000 people participated in the event. Symbolically, at these events, flowers were thrown on the Prut river, from both banks. This detail gave the name of the respective manifestations. On this occasion, for the first time after the Second World War, the Romanian-Soviet border could be crossed without documents. After this action, the procedures for crossing the Soviet-Romanian border were considerably simplified.

The second Flower Bridge was organised on June 16, 1991, marking the end of a phase that some call romantic in the relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

However, even after these events, the physical reconstruction of the bridges between the two countries was left to wait. According to some experts, this happened also because of the reduced financial capacity of the Republic of Moldova, but also because the economic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Romania did not develop as quickly as was assumed after independence.

The Leova - Bumbăta bridge would be the first new bridge over the Prut to be built after the occupation and annexation of Bessarabia by the former Soviet Union.
